Budding social media stars Tom Tanswell (18) and Tom Chapman (18) have tweeted their way up the career ladder by landing full-time jobs as social media apprentices.
Tom Tanswell will be working at integrated communications consultancy Tangerine. Tom Chapman will be lending his social media skills to XL Recruitment.
The teens are now encouraging other young people in the area to put themselves forward for the UK’s first ever industry-led social media apprenticeship programme, The Juice Academy.
Apprenticeships are an increasingly popular alternative to university, offering young people a chance to earn while they learn valuable skills. A recent survey by NotGoingToUni, a website which provides young people with information on alternative career options, even found 68 per cent of apprentices are fully satisfied in their career, compared to only 26 per cent of graduates.
While working for their respective companies, Tom and Tom will regularly attend The Juice Academy in Manchester to study towards a certificate in Social Media & Digital – Level 3, from City & Guilds, a respected national examination body. The apprentices will be trained by the best industry leaders in every area of social media and digital marketing management, such as digital strategy, developing content for social sharing, keyword analysis, SEO and optimising websites for mobile.
They will also receive sound industry advice and insight from some of the UK’s leading marketing specialists, who regularly visit The Juice Academy to host guest lectures. In the past year, this has included Dom Burch, senior director marketing innovation and new revenue at Asda, and David Parr, relationship director at Barclays.
Commenting on his achievement, Tom Chapman said: “Social media is such an exciting industry to work in, and I feel privileged that I can use my skills to kick-start my career”.
Speaking about his upcoming career move, Tom Tanswell said: “I’m really looking forward to starting my apprenticeship at Tangerine and I’m sure I will learn invaluable advice and skills while I’m a part of the team”.
The Juice Academy is the brainchild of integrated communications consultancy Tangerine, the apprenticeship is increasing youth employment and filling an industry-wide skills gap by training young professionals in the practical application of social media.
The Juice Academy is currently taking on its tenth cohort of apprentices to help them start their exciting social media careers with businesses such as Clock Creative, Carrot Insurance and Synaxon.
